When she saw her photographs — partially nude photographs of herself — posted on an anonymous porn website for the world to see, the North Attleboro woman was horrified. A friend had told her about the website a few weeks prior after she found nude photographs of her own on there.
I told her we have to do something about this. But she was so doubtful that anything would be done. But now, seeing her own photographs posted on the site, the woman was angry. There was her first name and last initial. The photographs showed her face. Those who knew who she was could tell: It was her.
Crude messages followed asking for fully nude photographs of the woman. Former male classmates tried connecting with her online. The thread itself, specific to North Attleboro, had nearly posts and over photographs and videos of local women in sexual positions. The images were website for local nudes shared with or taken by former boyfriends or lovers. They made deals to trade photographs, bargaining pictures of women in different positions in exchange for others.
They spoke of what they would do if they could get them in bed. They went back as far as and were as recent as this week. Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney said his detectives are looking into the site after being copied onto an from the woman sent to The Sun Chronicle last month. In surveying the site, The Sun Chronicle encountered posts that asked for photographs of freshmen, sophomores and juniors from area high schools. But there is little evidence as to how old each of the pictured women are aside from asking them themselves.
He said detectives have traced the website back to a server hosted on a small island off the coast of Africa, which has restricted police from obtaining subpoenas for IP addresses for users associated with the site. The U. And, Heagney is also looking into ways to report the website to have it shut down. Reilly said his detectives are also investigating the site but said with limited identifying information, his staff is running into trouble confirming that the photographs are of North Attleboro women.
He encouraged women affected by the site to report the situation to police. Heagney said offenders could be charged with child pornography if the person pictured was under the age of But other than that, charges would be limited to disorderly conduct, a breach of peace, criminal harassment or annoying or accosting another person.
But unlike child porn, posting nude photographs of adult individuals online without their consent is not considered a felony in Massachusetts. In April the governor said the current law addresses the non-consensual recording of individuals. But there is nothing currently illegal in distributing sexually explicit images without consent if those images were taken with permission. Baker said the images are often distributed by former spouses or lovers to embarrass or intimidate a person. The bill would also give judges the power to ensure the explicit image is permanently destroyed.
A similar penalty would be issued for someone who threatens to post revenge porn. Meanwhile, minors who share explicit images via text, called sexting, would be charged differently. Under the current law prosecutors are left with two options: Charge the minor with distribution or possession of child pornography, or let them off.
The former option means juvenile detention and a lifelong sex offender charge if convicted. The bill is under study and had a public hearing in November. But Massachusetts is one of the last to act. Thirty-eight states and D. Rhode Island legislators are reconsidering a similar bill after Gov. Gina Raimondo vetoed the legislation last year on grounds of free speech. I mean there have been some 16 yr old girls posted on here, but if they send em to anyone they run the risk.
Meanwhile, the woman interviewed for this story said the issue can website for local nudes disempowering for females who find themselves in this situation. The photos are private, oftentimes shared only out of trust. But even if they do, they are left with little recourse: To seek help in removing the pictures means outing yourself and drawing attention to the fact that your photos have been posted for the world to see. But the woman said she contacted The Sun Chronicle and police to raise awareness that the site exists. But women need to stand up for themselves.
I think if you avoid the problem, it just becomes worse. Kayla Canne can be reached atkcanne thesunchronicle. The illustration for this story was done by Portland, Ore. Hundreds of thre of a similar nature exist on the site, Anon-V, organized state by state. And that is just one of the many factors this issue is riddled with, Heagney said. Messages on the website show posters know they are free from the confines of the law.
Or, are at least doubtful that their actions will be traced back to them. It sucks. The Sun Chronicle is concealing her identity website for local nudes order to protect her from further harassment.
